What sustainability refers to is a very old and very simple concept – the ability to keep going over the long haul. As a value, it refers to giving equal weight in your decisions to the future as well as the present. You might think of it as extending the Golden Rule through time, so that you do unto future generations (as well as your present fellow beings) as you would have them do unto you.”  Robert Gillman

Sustainable design has played a role on every project that Suarez-Kuehne Architecture has undertaken. In some cases this simply involves appropriate technology, building materials, and design applied in a common sense way to minimize energy usage while providing quality, healthy environments for users. In others, an appropriate level of certification is sought to document “green” building efforts including reduced energy & water usage, use of resource efficient techniques & materials, and safety considerations.

Suarez-Kuehne Architecture takes pride in educating the whole design team, including the clients, on the appropriate opportunities for sustainability for each project. We have utilized both the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System and the Green Point Rated System by establishing realistic goals for a project early in the design phases which can then be tested and verified throughout the design and construction process. These building rating systems are based on existing proven technology. Both systems evaluate environmental performance from a “whole-systems” perspective over a building’s life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a “green building”.
